Top 10 Make Up Must Haves For The More Mature Woman
FOLLOWING ON FROM THE POPULARITY OF MY LAST BLOG, 'IS YOUR MAKE UP AGEING YOU?!' YOU WILL ALL BE PLEASED TO KNOW THAT THIS IS INDEED THE SECOND ADDITION, AGAIN DESIGNED WITH MORE MATURE WOMEN IN MIND. IN THIS BLOG I COVER 10 OF MY FAVOURITE SKIN CARE INGREDIENTS AND MAKE UP MUST HAVES TO AID THE MORE MATURE WOMAN IN HER QUEST TO STAY LOOKING ETERNALLY YOUTHFUL! :)
Glycolic acid -
Glycolic Acid is one of our favourite Skincare ingredients but why do we love it so much?
Glycolic Acid derives from plants – such as sugar cane, pineapple and sugar beets, it's botanical properties help to treat various skin conditions and will effectively remove the dead cells without needing to use an abrasive exfoliator. Over time it will leave your complexion looking much brighter and more youthful. In terms of mature skin, any dryness or dead skin build up will emphasise any fine lines and wrinkles. Products that contain Glycolic Acid are often used to treat the signs of ageing, helping to smooth out the more texture of ageing complexions. So I think its safe to say we have established exfoliating is a vital anti-ageing step not to be missed out on your skincare routine! We exfoliate to make our skin brighter, but we also want a lovely, smooth base for our make up too. As we age we need to think more along the lines less is more, exfoliating any rough skin will help us apply the products we need without creating excess build up. Glycolic Acid in skincare can be used to treat signs of ageing, like fine lines and wrinkles, scarring and skin discolouration. If you suffer from dull, pigmented or ageing skin it is worth introducing Glycolic Acid-based skincare products into your routine. Studies show that Glycolic Acid will assist with boosting collagen production which naturally deteriorates in the skin as we get older, so we definitely need all the help we can get in that department. Why not try introducing a Glycolic cleanser, toner and moisturiser to start you off and see how you get on?! We would recommend the budget-friendly "Naturally Radiant' range from Superdrug.
Clarins Vitamin C energy booster -
we all know we should consume vitamin c but why should we use it in our skincare?
As we age we don't naturally produce as much collagen or elastin anymore, both of which help our skin stay strong, supple and flexible. Collagen is a vital structural protein, helping the skin tissue remain firm and resist wrinkling. As we lose our collagen our skin becomes less resilient and we gain more fine lines and wrinkles. That's where Vitamin C comes in, it can help you boost your collagen production and help combat those fine lines and wrinkles. Clarins do some great little 'Boosters', which are the perfect addition to your skincare routine. The Energy Boosting Concentrate formulas specifically designed to target damaged skin. The Vitamin C Booster is a favourite of mine. If your skin is suffering from the effects of late nights, a hectic lifestyle, jet lag or even dieting, this 'Energy Booster' could be the right one for you. This Vitamin C Booster will help tone and re-energise the skin, minimise the signs of fatigue and will revive the radiance in your skin. Add a couple of drops to your face cream or foundation daily, I usually use them for a week or two as necessary. I often opt to introduce them back into my skincare routine following holidays, illness or a big night out. You can also use them in a face mask once a week to give your skin a little lift.
BareSkin Pure Brightening Foundation
I love the BareSkin Pure Brightening Foundation, especially on mature skin. BareSkin has a gorgeous lightweight formula that feels absolutely weightless when applied. It has a nice natural finish which is perfect for women with more mature skin. As we age our skin gets dull so swapping your matte foundation for a dewy one will make your skin look noticeably brighter and give you a more youthful appearance. Giving your skin back a natural looking glow is definitely the key to looking younger. The powerful minerals and brightening serum within this foundation make a great combination for women with more mature skin. As we get older we can find the tone of our skin changes, it becomes uneven and we get age spots. This skin brightening serum will improve the appearance of dark spots and discolourations for more even skin tone. With the added protection of non-chemical SPF 20 this foundation will help towards protecting your skin further from damaging UV rays, which we all know causes premature ageing.
L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Primer
This L'Oreal Paris Lumi Magique Primer really has been sent from above! This primer has a light reflecting range which gives luminosity to the skin. I tried this little gem a few years ago and it has been a favourite of mine ever since. It is so good that I have even used it on my brides! This beautiful pearly illuminator will give you an instant glow which is as mentioned before the key to looking youthful! With age, skin can become dull and tired, using products that give your skin back its radiance will instantly take years off! This lightweight formula infused with liquid light technology will give you a luminous looking complexion as if lit from within and keep you hydrated for approx 8 hours. This is a great product to not only use as a base for your make up but also on its own to give your skin a little lift!
Clarins 'Eclat Minute' Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base
Available in three shades - rose (brightens all complexions), champagne (corrects redness) and peach (restores lustre to the medium and matte skin) Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base leaves a veil of light radiance that evens skin tone, boosts luminosity and restores skin's vitality. Much like the Lumi Magique Base this Clarins Eclat Minute Base will give you back that beautiful youthful glow that disappears with age. This is perhaps the alternative product to the L'Oreal Primer if you are not on a budget. The High-Lumitec Complex within this primer will brighten your complexion and optically correct any imperfections in your skin tone for a more flawless finish. It also offers hydrating and soothing skin care benefits due to katafray bark extract. Again this would be my go-to primer when doing bridal make up.
Nars radiant creamy concealer
Nars is a Cosmetic brand popular amongst pro make up artists and make up enthusiasts alike. This Radiant Creamy Concealer has a beautiful, luxurious texture and luminous finish, which is great for using on more mature skin. You can use a small amount of this concealer or build it up for a full coverage effect. Enriched with hydrating, multi-action skincare benefits and light diffusing technology, it creates a softer, smoother complexion while instantly obscuring imperfections and diminishing fine lines and signs of fatigue. I use this concealer a lot in my makeovers because it never fails to conceal, it isn't a budget product so it does cost a little more but it is worth every penny in my humble opinion!
YSL TOUCHE ÉCLAT
It is no wonder that the YSL Touche Éclat illuminating Concealer Pen has become iconic within the make up industry. This wonder pen can be used to conceal, highlight and contour! This is a must-have product for even those women that don't like to wear make up. Tired eyes can get worse with age and harder to get rid of, so even just using a dab of light reflecting concealer will help disguise dark circles and under eye bags. Expertly developed by YSL Beauté this concealer can be used to highlight your best features and add instant radiance to your face. I really like the lightweight consistency of this concealer, it makes it really easy to work with and for some women with larger or puffier bags under their eyes, it is a great alternative to a more heavy/full coverage concealer.
benefit Hula bronzer
Known as 'beach in a box' Benefit Hula Bronzer blends beautifully to give your an instant sun-kissed glow. We should always take care when exposing ourselves to the sun for the obvious health reasons, but from a vanity point of view, we need to be more aware of how sun exposure will affect our skin in the long run. The best piece of advice I can give anyone in their 20s and above would always use sun protection, stay away from sunbeds and fake your tan where possible rather than basking in the sun for long periods of time. This will help you prolong getting wrinkles and keep you looking more youthful. Bronzer, I think is essential for giving your skin a healthy looking glow. I particularly like the colour of Benefit Hula, it hasn't got a horrible orangey undertone which is much better for more mature skin and it means you can create a nice natural contour with it too! It blends beautifully and in terms of value for money, this Benefit Bronzer will last you for ages!
SLEEK Face Form CONTOUR PALETTE
This is an absolute hero product for a woman of any age, the ultimate face definition kit!
It is great value for money, highly pigmented and lasts beautifully on the skin. It is a trio palette containing contour powder, highlighter and blusher. It comes in light, medium and dark and generally I use the light compact on many of my clients and a vast range of skin tones. I like the colour of the blush in this palette for the more mature woman. It's about as pink as I would tend to go for a more mature client. As we age we generally need to go softer with the shade of pink on our cheeks, opting for something peachy or a little duskier to keep us from looking overdone and doll-like. Although this pink is a little lighter it has a natural feel to it. It is soft and subtly iridescent which will reflect the light whilst adding a nice youthful glow to the cheeks. The highlighter in this palette is not 'too shiny' so used sparingly it is less likely to draw attention to any fine lines and wrinkles. If however you do apply too much its also easily blended away which makes it really easy to work with. The contour colour in this palette again works with lots of skin tones for a more natural contour.
bareMinerals® Original SPF 15 Foundation
Mineral powder foundation when used sensibly will generally look and feel much more natural than a liquid foundation. It is for that reason why so many mature women tend to opt for a powder foundation like BareMinerals® Original. However, if used in large amounts it can cling to deeper lines and wrinkles and in some cases emphasise them. It is all about learning to use a product correctly! I like using this foundation on my more mature clients to create flawless coverage with a naturally luminous finish that doesn't generally clump or cake. Mineral Powder is quick and easy to apply and super lightweight. I am a firm believer that as we age we slowly need to look at where we need to use fewer products and where we are to use more. As mentioned avoid using large amounts of this powder around lots of lines and wrinkles, or if you have really dry skin because you may feel like it draws attention to that area. Using a nice dewy primer underneath may make a nicer base for this foundation to sit on top of.
